چکیده

Biofilm populations of Nitrosomonas europaea were formed in continuous flow sand columns supplied with defined inorganic medium containing 50 pg NH:-N ml-‘. Steady-state nitrite concentrations in effluent from the columns decreased as the pH of the inflowing medium was reduced but ammonia oxidation occurred at a pH value of 6, even though the pH minimum for growth of the organism in liquid batch culture was 7. No evidence was obtained for NH, limitation at low pH values, resulting from ionization to NH:. The pH minimum for ammonia-oxidizing activity was also reduced in continuous flow vermiculite columns supplied with medium of pH 5.4, with an effluent pH of 6.3, but detailed assessment of the effects of low pH on activity was prevented by the strong buffering capacity of vermiculite. A multispecies, nitrifying biotilm, formed as wall growth in an ammonia-limited chemostat, was capable of ammonia-oxidizing activity, but not growth, at pH 5 while growth was possible at pH 5.5. The data provide evidence of the potential for autotrophic nitrification in acid soils.

Nitrification in a biofilm at low pH values: role of in situ microenvironments and acid tolerance.

The sensitivity of nitrifying bacteria to acidic conditions is a well-known phenomenon and generally attributed to the lack and/or toxicity of substrates (NH3 and HNO2) with decreasing pHs. In contrast, we observed strong nitrification at a pH around 4 in biofilms grown on chalk particles and investigated the following hypotheses: the presence of less acidic microenvironments and/or the existen...

High-rate nitrification at low pH in suspended- and attached-biomass reactors.

This article reports on high-rate nitrification at low pH in biofilm and suspended-biomass reactors by known chemolithotrophic bacteria. In the biofilm reactor, at low pH (4.3 +/- 0.1) and low bulk ammonium concentrations (9.3 +/- 3.3 mg.liter(-1)), a very high nitrification rate of 5.6 g of N oxidized.liter(-1).day(-1) was achieved. The specific nitrification rate (0.55 g of N.g of biomass(-1)...

Monochloramine Cometabolism by Nitrifying Biofilm Relevant to Drinking Water

2016 © American Water Works Association JOURNAL AWWA JULY 2016 | 108:7 Chloramine use is widespread in US drinking water distribution systems as a secondary disinfectant, and its use is predicted to increase with the final implementation of the Stage 2 Disinfectants and Disinfection Byproducts Rule (USEPA 2005). Chloramination is beneficial from the perspective of controlling formation of regul...

Cultivation of an obligate acidophilic ammonia oxidizer from a nitrifying acid soil.

Nitrification is a fundamental component of the global nitrogen cycle and leads to significant fertilizer loss and atmospheric and groundwater pollution. Nitrification rates in acidic soils (pH < 5.5), which comprise 30% of the world's soils, equal or exceed those of neutral soils. Paradoxically, autotrophic ammonia oxidizing bacteria and archaea, which perform the first stage in nitrification,...

Study on Nitrite Accumulation Characteristics and Nitrifying Population Dynamics at Different Growth Environments

Novel nitrogen removal technologies via nitrite pathway attract increasing interest in recent years. In this study, batch experiments were performed to investigate nitrite accumulation characteristics and shifts in nitrifying community structure at different growth environments including ammonia concentration, pH and alkalinity. It was found that nitrite accumulation ratios were maintained at a...
